Let’s be honest, not everyone feels like a natural in front of the camera. In fact, one of the most common things I hear from couples is: “We’re a bit awkward on camera” or “We don’t know what to do with ourselves.”

If that sounds like you, you’re not alone. But here’s the good news, your wedding video doesn’t have to be a polished performance. It should feel like you. Candid. Honest. Full of love and little moments you didn’t even know were being captured.

As a wedding videographer based in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, my goal is never to make you act a certain way or pose in a way that feels unnatural. Instead, I help create space where you can just be, and I capture your day as it truly unfolds with all the emotion, joy, and connection.

If the thought of being filmed still makes you nervous, here are my top wedding day tips to feeling comfortable on camera.

1. Do a Pre-Wedding Shoot or Engagement Session

This is one of the best ways to ease into being filmed. A short engagement shoot gives us a chance to meet, chat, and create something lovely together without the pressure of a wedding timeline.

It’s relaxed, low-key, and all about getting comfortable with the camera (and with me!). You’ll walk away with some beautiful footage of you two just being yourselves. And you’ll head into your wedding day already knowing what to expect.

Here’s what one of my lovely couples had to say after doing just that:

“Having Sophie capture our special day on video was one of the best decisions we made. From meeting Sophie at our engagement shoot we hit it off instantly! Sophie listened to us & got to know us as a couple.

She arrived on the morning of our wedding, so calm and professional. Sophie worked alongside our photographer & many of our guests mentioned how well they worked together as a team on the day to capture our special moments.

Sophie really helped keep our nerves at ease — for us, being in front of the camera is not the most natural. However, Sophie managed to capture the candid, intimate moments.

We are forever grateful for her guidance throughout our special day and our video that captures the work that went into making it so memorable.
We would highly recommend Sophie @ Cruising Creative.”

2. Choose a Videographer You Feel a Connection With

You don’t need to be best friends with your videographer, but you do want to feel like you can trust them and be yourself around them. When you feel comfortable with the person holding the camera, you’ll naturally feel more relaxed on the day.

I always spend time getting to know my couples. Either by chatting over coffee or a Zoom call, sending voice notes, asking questions that aren’t just about timelines but about you as people. That relationship goes a long way toward helping you feel safe and seen on your wedding day.

3. Focus on Each Other, Not the Camera

One of the easiest ways to feel comfortable on camera is to actually forget the camera and focus on your person. Talk to each other. Hold hands. Share a laugh. Whisper something silly or sweet. Remember, these moments are probably some of the only times on your wedding day that you will get with your other half. So, make sure to be present and have a little catch up! When you’re truly present with your partner, you’ll forget I’m even there.

Some of the most beautiful moments I capture are the ones where couples are lost in their own little world, not thinking about the camera at all.

4. Trust the Process — It’s Not About Perfection

You don’t need to perform. You don’t need to act a certain way or “get it right.” Just remember that your video isn’t meant to be a  Hollywood production, it’s simply meant to be a memory. And the most meaningful parts are often the perfectly imperfect ones: the wind in your hair, the happy tears, the spontaneous laughs.

That’s what I love to capture. Not the posed, polished moments, but the real ones.

5. Work With Your Photographer & Videographer as a Team

On your wedding day, your photographer and videographer will be with you more than almost anyone else. So, it helps when we work in sync. I always communicate with your photographer to ensure we’re not crowding you, doubling up on shots, or adding any stress.

When the vibe is relaxed and collaborative, you’ll feel it too. It allows you to stay in the moment. And…that’s when the magic happens.

6. Take a Moment for Just the Two of You

Amidst the buzz and excitement of the day, carve out a quiet moment alone with your partner. Often, I’ll gently guide couples to a peaceful spot for a short walk or pause together. It’s not about staging anything, it’s about giving you space to breathe, connect, and soak it all in.

These moments often lead to some of the most meaningful footage. It’s authentic and beautifully reflective of your connection.

Final Thoughts

Feeling comfortable on camera doesn’t have to be daunting. With the right approach (and the right person behind the lens), it can feel natural, even enjoyable. My style at Cruising Creative is all about blending into your day. I love to capture the emotion, intimacy, and celebration without ever making you feel like you’re “on stage.”

You don’t need to be confident in front of the camera. You just need to be yourselves, I’ll take care of the rest!
